Book and Review

by Jerri Conner

MOSES: When Harriet Tubman Led Her People to Freedom

An interesting choice for a church library you might think, and you would be right.  But this book is a children's picture book which was chosen as a Caldecott Honor Book and won the Coretta Scott King Award which honors books that reflect the African American experience.  What makes this book worthy of our Kanapaha library is that it describes Harriet Tubman's Christian faith in leading her to the work of her life. The illustrations are astounding.

Now, in fairness, we note that Harriet Tubman was beaten so badly (being hit in the head with a two pound weight) by one of her enslavers as a child that she experienced severe headaches, blackouts, speechlessness...and hearing the voice of God.  God, Who said to her, "I set the north star in the heavens and I mean for you to be free."  So, right there, is a direct quote from God to Harriet Tubman to you.

The world out there could so easily explain this away with the brain injury except (big EXCEPT), that for the rest of her life she followed the voice of God she clearly heard for every minute of that life.  There is no doubt that she heard the voice: "I'm going to see you through, Child.", "The hour has come.", "Harriet, you dreamed that saints saved you, but mortals will give you refuge."  And lots more.

So, read this book with your children.  Let the naysaying neurologists argue with the fact that she escaped, "went back south nineteen times and freed three hundred slaves.  She never lost a passenger."

"It wasn't me.  It was the Lord.  I always trust Him to lead me and He always does."--Harriet Tubman.

Dear KPC,

I want to thank all of the members of Kanapaha Church who helped make my graduation an enjoyable and heartfelt experience. Not only do I appreciate all of the wonderful gifts and congratulations that I received upon my graduation, but I also appreciate the time, energy, and care that has been put into the last four years of my high school experience and all of the years before them. Kanapaha has been like another family for me for many years, and I will miss each and every member of the congregation when I leave in the fall.

Thank you again to everyone that has helped me throughout the years and to everyone that helped me celebrate my graduation .Love,

Katie Lynch

Dear Kanapaha Presbyterian Church:

I wanted to say how much I appreciate what you have done for me these last 4 years. Everyone has supported me and made me feel a part of this big family. I will keep everyone in my prayers, and I hope you will do the same for me in the next 4 years.

I want to thank Lisa Dixon and her mother for makingthe beautiful shawl. I will use and cherish it for the rest of my life. I also want to thank Pastor Dawn for the Book of Grace. I know that if I need any advice I can open it and find an answer. Thank you again for your friendships and support.     Love,  Katie Johnson.

Rainforest Adventure VBS

Act fast, and you’ll still have time to register your children (or grandchildren!) for a great Vacation Bible School experience – Rainforest Adventure.

For five evenings in July (July 21 to 25), children who range from preschool to rising 6th grade will learn to Share, Give, Grow, Love, and Praise as they have a Tree-Top Bible Blast right here at Kanapaha.

Bible stories, songs, crafts, games, and science activities will help children grow closer to God. The children will also begin to understand some of the many ways we can take care of God’s wondrous creation.

VBS will meet from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday of that week. On Friday, we’ll start a bit earlier – 5:30 p.m. – so we can enjoy a barbecue.

Please fill out the following registration form, and attach your payment: $10 per child, with a $20 per family limit. We look forward to seeing your children there!

MISSIONS

by Dave Miller

The mission committee is still looking for help with Christmas International House project. This is a holiday of friendship with international students. We as a Church plan activities, provide housing, meals, and sightseeing trips. We have one person willing to share their house one student for one week we need someone to provide housing for the other week. If any one else would like an international guest for Christmas, contact me or Pat Stump. We also need people to help with meals and any activities. We want this to be a Church effort not just an individual effort. The students will be signing up in August. We will be contacting them soon. The other item for this newsletter is the annual garage sale for the student center. It will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church on August 17 and 18. Be thinking of what you can donate. If you need pick-up let me know.

We gave out 2 cents a meal banks for your home for our Jamaican Mission. If you did not get one and want one contact me and I will see that you get one. Fill them up and bring them to Church and we will collect your donation. Then return the banks to your home and start all over again. Also there will be cans on the tables at pot luck for the same purpose.

This year the mission committee would like to start a new endeavor. It will work like a Christmas Savings Club that some people do with their bank to save money to buy gifts for Christmas. Instead of giving the money to the bank you would give installment payments to the church, and by Christmas we can help those in need. We will have an international mission and a local mission . We will have charts

If you want to be part of deciding which two missions we will concentrate on, come to the mission meeting on Committee Sunday. These are your missions, please participate. The money will be designated Christmas Mission and dispersed near Christmas. You may also further designate your giving for international or local Christmas Mission. I hope this new endeavor will be a success at the back of the Church or Memorial Hall to track our progress. We would like you to give as much as you can.
